SPECIAL NOTIFICATION:  This position is exempt from classified state service and the rules of the Division of Human Resources and the Idaho Personnel Commission.

Position Overview:

The Director is responsible for administering the overall operation of the University Bronco Shop (University Bookstore). This includes branch operations and remote support facilities. This position is responsible for ensuring that retail goods and services are available with primary emphasis on support of the academic and research missions of the University.

A vital, not-for-profit retailer that is a dynamic resource for Boise State University.

The Boise State University Bookstore serves the students, faculty, staff, and community as the campus retailer, fostering academic success, university allegiance, and student scholarships.

The Director has authority and responsibility for the effective and efficient operation of a University Retail Operation. Authority includes staff development and supervision of all accounting, buying, and merchandising of products and services. There is a commitment of large sums of money for merchandise and equipment. The decisions made by this position have substantial impact on the soundness of the way goods and services are provided to the campus community in a rapidly changing environment.

The Director must develop and maintain positive relations with a variety of administrative offices including: University Deans, Department Chairpersons, Faculty and Student Government leaders and members of Student Affairs Council as well as Professional Staff Members.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


Leadership and management of all financial affairs for the University Bookstore. This includes direct oversite and leadership in the following area:

Multi-year financial forecasting
The production of written financial procedures and training materials
Cash controls for rotary cash/vault funds
Cash handling procedures
Defines areas for internal accounting control
Accounts receivable
Accounts payable
Financial reconciliation and report generation
Reviews and analyzes financial statements
Maintains accurate perpetual inventory
Provides for annual physical inventory and year end closing

Manages store resources to establish and maintain adequate and reasonable inventory levels including an open to buy plan.

Responsible for development & maintenance of a strategic plan for the university store(s).

Ensures completion of financial reporting for benchmarking and sharing of results.

Ensures successful implementation and coordination of the Athletic Commission Agreement.

Responsible for daily management and approval of purchase orders of buyers reporting to this position.


Formulates internal policies and procedures designed to meet goals and commitments.

Provides leadership for merchandising, organization, and cleanliness of store facilities.

Provides leadership for development and management of maintenance standards.

Coordinates the development of marketing/merchandising plans for store(s).

Evaluates and manages product selection, merchandise purchases, and inventory levels.

Initiates and oversees the opening of new Bronco Shop locations.

Implements and oversees the custom t-shirt printing operations of the Bronco Shop.

Oversees the sourcing of product from overseas.


General administration of overall Bronco Shop operation and remote support facilities.

General administration of five Bronco Shop stores (Stadium, BODO, Meridian, Gateway, and Twin Falls)

Directs overall recruiting, hiring and training of all Bronco Shop staff, develop job functions, coordinate position descriptions, duties and appraisals with department managers. Provides for education, training and motivation of Bronco Shop staff.

Develops and leads the faculty/student/staff advisory board process to assist store in management and policy.

Develops and maintains customer service standards.


Provides leadership for the development and maintenance of the store’s technology. Evaluates future technology needs, which includes hardware, software, web presence, and networking.

Provides leadership for ecommerce systems for stores.

Oversees the store’s digital delivery and creation of course materials.


This position hires student employees and/or state temporary employees, in addition to classified and professional full-time staff. This position will complete performance evaluations, determine work schedules and work assignments.

The successful candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

Detailed knowledge of College Textbook Industry.

Ability and skills in implementing technology in the retail environment, examples being POS (Point of Sale) equipment, computers used for accounting, inventory tracking, communication to vendors, banks and off campus sites.

Prior experience developing and maintaining capital planning.

Experience with automated accounting & inventory control systems and reporting.

Proven ability of dependably to create a strategic plan for the department. Assign and meet goals in a timely and accurate fashion.

Knowledge in financial & human resource management, store operations and maintenance of a high level customer service to the campus.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
8 years of experience in similar role including 3 years of managerial experience

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Business or Retail Management
8 years of supervisory experience, 2 years in similar role
Prior experience using the following: Laser printers, Dot matrix card printers, Check signer, Scanner, WINPRISM system, PeopleSoft, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Gmail

Salary Range:  $75,000 - $81,000 plus an excellent benefits package
