The Idaho Department of Juvenile Corrections is recruiting for a Rehabilitation Specialist for our Lewiston facility.

Serves on a multi-disciplinary team, developing and implementing treatment plans for clients in a juvenile correctional facility; facilitates individual and group problem solving; serves as a youth advocate and provides liaison with judicial, community, and family representatives; maintains the security and safety of youth.


- Applicants are required to complete the IMPACT ASSESSMENT: Applicants must be willing to take the IMPACT Assessment examination and receive a passing score in order to be considered for this position. The assessment is designed to test skills and attitude, measuring the overall suitability needed to work with juvenile offenders. It consists of two parts: A Human Relations Video Test (76 question over 75 minutes) and a Reading Test (31 questions over 15 minutes).

- The successful applicant hired for this position is required to obtain the Juvenile Corrections Direct Care Staff Certificate through the Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Academy within one year of the hire date. For information regarding the requirements see the information below under Minimum Qualifications, POST entrance requirements. A complete criminal history background investigation including, but not limited to, the Idaho State Police Criminal Identification Bureau, FBI, and the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare will be conducted on the successful applicant. - Successful applicants will have several forms to complete as well as answer questions regarding their history of drug and alcohol abuse, and physical, mental and emotional history for POST qualifications.
- These positions require rotating shift work, which may include graveyard shift, weekend and holiday work. Employees are expected to cover shifts as needed or assigned. Employees who work nights or graveyard may receive 5% shift differential.
- The successful applicant will be required to take and pass a Tuberculosis test during the first 30 days of employment and must complete and pass a medical, vision, and hearing exam within 60 days of employment.


- Considerable knowledge of group processes and dynamics, and intervention and treatment methods.

- Good knowledge of problems and needs of delinquent youth. 

- Good knowledge of the juvenile justice system.

- Some knowledge of training methods.

- Experience: conducting and evaluating individual and group problem solving sessions; developing and implementing treatment programs; composing written reports

- Willingness to:
-deal with violence, harassment, threats, verbal abuse; break up fights, control disturbances, and physically restrain offenders;
-perform searches for contraband and weapons;
-work alone unarmed among unrestricted offenders;
-work in secure/locked facility in confined spaces;
-learn and follow department policies, procedures, rules, and instructions;
-set aside personal prejudices and be fair;
-work in high-stress, hostile environments;
-transport juveniles; become certified in First Aid and CPR.
- Physical requirement: no hearing, sight, or physical limitations that would prevent performance of duties.
POST Certification within one year of hire.  Includes POST entrance requirements (Questions 1 - 10 on the exam) as follows:
- U.S. Citizenship
-Possession of a valid driver's license
-High school diploma or GED
-Two years of post-high-school responsible experience
-No felony convictions
-No DUI convictions within the last two years
-No convictions of crimes of deceit, drugs, or sex crimes within the last 5 years
-Military discharge standards
-Hearing and vision standards

The exam for this position is a combination checklist and questions requiring a narrative response. After the announcement has closed, applications will be scored. -Proof of high school diploma/GED or equivalent. Acceptable documents are: High school diploma, GED certificate, HSE (high school equivalency) certificate, high school transcript showing completion of high school, or official college transcripts showing successful completion of 15 or more credits.
-Military discharge DD-214 Member 4 copy (if applicable).
-Valid Driver's License

The Idaho Department of Juvenile Corrections has regionalized state services for juveniles committed to its custody, making it possible for most juveniles to remain close enough to their communities so parents and other key community members can take part in the juvenile's treatment. State juvenile correctional centers are located in Lewiston, Nampa, and St. Anthony and provide a full complement of services for 268 youth who range from 10 to 20 years of age.

Located at the confluence of the Snake and Clearwater Rivers, Lewiston is a vibrant city with a population of 35,000. Although Lewiston is located in a mostly rural area it has not been affected by the recent economic downturn.
