The mission of the Idaho Department of Correction is to protect the public, our staff and those within our custody and supervision through safety, accountability, partnerships and

Correctional Corporals provide security and protection functions as well as lead work responsibilities within the correctional facilities. This position assists in unit operations to ensure that all unit documentation and security procedures are adhered to.

This announcement will be used to fill an upcoming vacancy at the North Idaho Correctional Institution (NICI) and may be used to fill future vacancies in the North Idaho area facilities only to include the NICI and Idaho Correctional Institution - Orofino (ICIO) within the next 6 months. If you wish to be considered for this vacancy, you must apply under this announcement. Previous scores will not be used.  All interested applicants are encouraged to apply even if there is not a current opening for Corporal at the North Idaho facility that you are interested in.

**If you are interested in other regions of the State for IDOC then you will be required to submit a separate application and exam for the other specific locations (East Idaho or the Treasure Valley). These announcements will be posted periodically.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide the same security and protective functions as a Correctional Officer including supervising offenders in work, living, and recreation situations
  • Protect staff and offenders through non-invasive special tactics or by force, if necessary
  • Assists with unit operations and ensures staff and offenders adhere to security procedures
  • Trains employees, provides guidance, assigns work, monitors performance, and provides performance feedback
  • Provides back-up to unit Sergeants, and may provide shift commander coverage
  • May participate in specialized treatment programs and perform lead work responsibilities of security staff in the delivery and support of treatment services

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience performing security and control procedures in a correctional environment
  • Peace Officer and Standards Training (P.O.S.T.) certified as a Correctional Officer or Detention Officer OR be grandfathered in for the Correctional Officer certification in accordance with IDAPA Rule 11.11.04.052
  • Some knowledge of supervision

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATION:

  • Experience participating on a team, committee, or special project such as FTO, mentor, or facilitator (not required but if you have related background it may increase your score)
  • Currently employed with Idaho Department of Correction or at an adult correctional facility in Idaho

HIRING INFORMATION: To be hired, candidates will have a history and background supportive of department mission goals and will be subject to:

  • Completing a Background Investigation Questionnaire and pre-employment drug testing
  • Having a federal and state criminal background check to include fingerprints
  • Having a history of law-abiding behavior
  • Felonies, misdemeanors, illegal drug usage, DUIs, adverse driving convictions and employment history may make you ineligible for employment

Non-hiring restrictions are in place for candidates who:

  • Have been convicted of Domestic Violence or similar types of violent behaviors
  • Have a dishonorable discharge from military service
  • Currently are using, dealing or are associated with illegal drugs
  • Have close friends or relatives under IDOC care & custody where the vacancy exists
  • Are currently under IDOC supervision or probation (must be released from IDOC supervision or probation for at least one year)

EXAMINATION:

All answers to the questions on the exam must be supported in the work history and on your customized resume in in this application. Your score will consist of a written on-line exam only. You must obtain a minimum score of 66 on this exam to receive a final passing score. Exam results will be available online when the scoring process is complete.

PRISON RAPE ELIMINATION ACT (PREA)

In compliance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) of 2003, we are required to obtain certain information in the exam/interview process and consider specific information when making hiring and selection decisions for positions that have contact with inmates "in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility, or other institution..." The PREA Standards do not require we obtain this information for positions not within a correctional facility such as Probation & Parole and Central Office positions. Again, these changes are being implemented in order for the department to the meet the requirement of PREA standards.
