The Mission of the Idaho Department of Correction is to protect the public, our staff and those within our custody and supervision through safety, accountability, partnerships and providing opportunities for offender change.

Correctional Sergeants train and supervise staff, oversee the daily operations of an adult correctional facility and perform difficult security and offender management functions.

This announcement will be used to fill full-time, part-time, temporary or limited service positions over the next six (6) months for the North Idaho. Facilities include North Idaho Correctional Center (NICI) and Idaho Correctional Institution - Orofino (ICIO). All interested applicants are encouraged to apply even if there is not a current opening for Sergeant at the facility where you are interested in working. Previous scores will not be used. Hiring lists may be created from open competitive, IDOC Department Promotional and/or Statewide promotional applicants. Selected candidates must be Idaho POST Certified or complete Idaho POST Academy.

  • Supervision and Training:
    • Trains correctional staff regarding facility rules, procedures, and specific post duties
    • Assigns work and inspects posts to ensure officers are performing properly
    • Evaluates officer performance
    • Mediates officer disputes
    • Responds to employee grievances
  • Unit Management:
    • Develops work schedules
    • Inspects tiers, housing units, and compound for breaches of security
    • Organizes and directs management of offenders in a living unit
    • Resolves difficult or volatile offender conflicts
    • Active member of offender case management team
  • Special Assignments: 
    • Serves on review boards
    • Acts as institution hearing officer
    • Participates as member of classification committee, and facility problems


  • Some knowledge of supervision
  • Experience applying policies and procedures, offender culture, and search, seizure and restraint procedures in an adult correctional facility
  • Meet entrance requirements established by the Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Academy for Correction Officers.


  • Some knowledge of training methods

To be hired, candidates will have a history and background supportive of department’s goals and hiring will be subject to:

  • Completing a Background Investigation Questionnaire and pre-employment drug test
  • Having a federal and state criminal background check to include fingerprints
  • Having a history of law-abiding behavior
  • Felonies, misdemeanors, illegal drug usage, DUIs, adverse driving convictions and adverse employment history may make you ineligible for employment.
  • Having close friends or relatives under IDOC care & custody may also make you ineligible for employment

Non-hiring restrictions are in place for candidates who:

  • Have been convicted of Domestic Violence or similar types of violent behaviors
  • Have an other than honorable, bad conduct or dishonorable discharge from military service
  • Currently are using, dealing or are associated with illegal drugs
  • Have close friends or relatives under IDOC care & custody where the vacancy exists
  • Are currently under IDOC supervision or probation (must be released from IDOC supervision or probation for at least one year)


There are TWO exams for this position.

  1. Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) - In compliance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) of 2003, we are required to obtain certain information in the exam/interview process and consider specific information when making hiring and selection decisions for positions that have contact with inmates "in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility, or other institution..." The PREA Standards do not require we obtain this information for positions not within a correctional facility such as Probation & Parole and Central Office positions. Again, these changes are being implemented in order for the department to the meet the requirement of PREA standards.   2. Multiple Choice Exam - Choose the options that best describe your education, training and/or experience. You must pass with a minimum score of 56 or higher to be considered for this position.
    • Subject Matter Expert Review – Your resume must support your exam answers. A subject matter expert will review your exam to determine if your training, education and experience match the information you provide in your resume. If you do not provide a customized resume, you will not meet the minimum level on the exam.
    • Notification of test results – Your test results will be available online once all of the exams have been score. Check back approximately 2 weeks after the announcement closes.
    • Hiring List – Your exam score will determine your placement on the hiring list. Individuals who score within the top 25 of all candidates are eligible to interview based on job-related competencies.
