The Mission of the Idaho Department of Correction is to protect the public, our staff and those within our custody and supervision through safety, accountability, partnerships and providing opportunities for offender change.

The Correctional Lieutenant oversees the staff and offender activity at the correctional facility and ensures the civil rights of offenders are provided for and protected. The incumbent is expected to work non-standard hours including weekends. This is an exciting promotional opportunity for a motivated individual to advance and learn.

This announcement may also be used to fill Lieutenant vacancies within the next six (6) months for the South Boise Complex to include Idaho State Correctional Center (ISCC), South Boise Womens Correction Center (SBWCC), Idaho Maximum Security Institution (IMSI), Idaho State Correctional Institution (ISCI) and South Idaho Correctional Institution (SICI). This announcement may be used to fill current or future full-time, part-time, permanent, temporary or limited-service positions. This is a department promotional opportunity, limited only to classified employees of the Idaho Department of Correction who have completed entrance probation.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Interpret and direct enforcement of institution policy, rules, and procedures for staff and offenders
  • Recommend goals and priorities and evaluate results
  • Review offender control and transportation procedures and authorize exceptions
  • Identify program needs, evaluate effectiveness, work with program staff, and may meet with service providers and other referral agencies to develop and make recommendations for improvements
  • Deliver training and ensure staff is trained in facilitating program components
  • Direct and conduct security inspections of the institution and search offenders for contraband and dangerous items
  • Participate in recommending security budget and work procedures
  • Recommend staff hiring, train, mentor, and coach staff, assign work and evaluate performance, and resolve employee grievances
  • Determine need for additional personnel or posts during work shift and review work procedures
  • Approve employee leave and change in work schedule requests
  • Investigate charges of wrongdoing or misconduct against staff or offenders, explain investigation procedures, interview witnesses and write formal reports of findings

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Some knowledge of management of practices
  • Some knowledge of training methods
  • Experience supervising others in a correctional setting
  • Good knowledge of offender management

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATION

  • Some knowledge of the Incident Command System

HIRING INFORMATION:

To be hired, candidates will have a history and background supportive of department mission goals and will be subject to:

  • Completing a Background Investigation Questionnaire and pre-employment drug testing
  • Having a federal and state criminal background check to include fingerprints
  • Having a history of law-abiding behavior
  • Felonies, misdemeanors, illegal drug usage, DUIs, adverse driving convictions and employment history may make you ineligible for employment

Non-hiring restrictions are in place for candidates who:

  • Have been convicted of Domestic Violence or similar types of violent behaviors
  • Have a dishonorable discharge from military service
  • Currently are using, dealing or are associated with illegal drugs
  • Have close friends or relatives under IDOC care & custody
  • Are currently under IDOC supervision or probation (must be released from IDOC supervision or probation for at least one year)

EXAMINATION:

You will receive a score based on your education, training, and experience in the answers to the exam. A minimum score of 66 is required to pass. Notification of your test results will be available online when the exam review process has been completed. All answers to the questions on the exam must be supported in the work history, resume, and/or education portion of your application.
