The Idaho State Police (ISP) has an exciting career opportunity available for those interested in enforcing laws, serving people, and enhancing the quality of life in the State of Idaho. RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide assistance and service to the citizens of Idaho
  • Perform traffic control and enforcement
  • Conduct motor vehicle crash investigations
  • Prepare reports
  • Conduct criminal investigations
  • Process and investigate crime scenes
  • Effectively present testimony in a court of law
  • Be proficient in the use of firearms
  • Many other duties as assigned
  • Some specialty assignments include crash reconstruction, firearms instructor, drug recognition expert, field training officer, motorcycle patrol, capitol security, and commercial vehicle safety.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants must meet the entrance requirements outlined in Idaho Administrative Code 11.11.01 – Rules of the Idaho Peace Officer Standards & Training (POST) Council.

  • Shall be a citizen of the United States
  • Must be a graduate of an accredited high school, or GED equivalent
  • Shall be a minimum of twenty-one (21) years of age
  • Possess a valid driving license from their state of residence and qualify for an Idaho driver's license
  • Fingerprint clearance by the Idaho State Police Bureau of Criminal Identification and the FBI. A conviction or withheld judgment for any local, state, or federal crime may be grounds for rejection
  • Successfully complete a background investigation
  • Attest to the Code of Ethics/Standards of Conduct on POST application

Additional Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicants must successfully complete a polygraph examination
  • Must meet the Idaho State Police (ISP) Drug Policy Requirements
  • Must meet the ISP medical, vision, hearing, psychological, and physical fitness requirements
  • Must have two (2)or more years of responsible work experience or attendance at an institution of higher learning following high school graduation
  • Must successfully complete the ISP Advanced Training Course, including obtaining a POST Basic Certification, and the post-graduate Field Training Officer (FTO) program.

Work Shifts: Shifts may vary depending on department needs, location, and specialty area. Many Troopers currently work four, 10-hour shifts per week with rotating days off. Troopers must be willing to work weekends and holidays. Most schedules alternate between day and night every two months.

Work Location: Applicants must be willing to work anywhere in Idaho. ISP attempts to accommodate work location choices whenever possible; however, assignments will be based on department staffing needs. Transfer requests are typically not considered for two years from time of hire. Successful candidates will be required to sign a two (2)-year Assignment, Transfer or Promotion Commitment Agreement as part of the final job offer.

Salary: Entry salary is $20.06 per hour. After successful completion of entrance probation (usually one year) and the Field Training Program, Troopers are eligible for pay increases via the ISP CHOICE Program.

ISP has a salary plan called Project CHOICE (Creating Hope, Opportunity, and Incentives for Career Employment) designed to provide incentives for recruitment and retention. The Project CHOICE plan distributes pay increases to employees for the attainment of certificates and other achievements relevant to their job class and the ISP mission. The purpose of Project CHOICE is to attract potential applicants to the ISP workforce, retain the workforce already in place, and reward employees who take on additional duties or tasks, and who work to better themselves in academic and professional settings.

Lateral Hires: Lateral transfers from other police agencies need to apply under this announcement. ISP provides a comprehensive program that consists of both POST certification and the ISP Advanced Training Course (ATC). Current Law Enforcement Officers with at least five years of commissioned law enforcement officer experience may be eligible for a higher entry salary.

EXAMINATIONS: In addition to your online application, there are two online exams that must be taken, the ISP Trooper – MQ Screen and the ISP Trooper - LXR.

ISP recommends you utilize a personal computer to complete the LXR exam.
IPad, tablets, and smart phones are not recommended for completing this examination.
Use of these types of devices may affect your examination score and could end your testing session prematurely.

1. ISP Trooper - MQ Screen. This is a checklist exam to determine if you meet the minimum qualifications to become a Trooper. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will then be eligible to take the online written (LXR) examination.

2. ISP Trooper - LXR. You will have 60 minutes to complete the online ISP Trooper written (LXR) examination. Do not begin the exam until you have time to complete the exam without interruptions. The content of the examination is confidential and you must take this examination independently. You may be asked in the background and/or polygraph examination if you took the exam independently.

NOTE: After you complete the written (LXR) exam, there are no additional steps required from you at this time even though the online application system will show one more required step (oral exam).

3. ISP Trooper - ORAL SCORE - DHR USE ONLY. This exam does not need to be completed by the applicant. It is for DHR Use Only.

Notification of your test results will be available online when the review process is completed. You can access this by logging into your applicant account at: https://labor.idaho.gov/DHR/ATS/StateJobs/Apply/Login.asp. You then select the “Exams Summary” tab, click on either “Current Exams” or “All Exams” and the score will be displayed.

Hiring Process: The hiring process takes approximately six months to complete. Applicants are required to travel to Idaho to complete various steps of the testing process.

Because of the large number of applicants anticipated for this recruitment, only the top applicants will be invited in for the physical fitness testing and oral board exam. This means it is possible to pass the written exam but not score high enough to move on in the hiring process. If you are selected to proceed forward in the hiring process you will receive an e-mail from ISP with detailed information regarding the next step.

Physical Fitness Exam. You must pass this test in order to proceed in the hiring process. Scores from physical fitness exam will be factored into the final hiring decisions. You can view these standards at ISP Physical Fitness Requirements. It is extremely important that you fully prepare for this physical fitness exam. If you are ultimately selected as an ISP Trooper, it is critical that you be very well prepared physically prior to the training academy.

Oral Board Exam. This will be scheduled after the successful completion of the physical fitness exam. This exam is similar to an interview however the panel members cannot ask clarifying questions. Please answer all questions fully.

Testing Dates and Locations:

Coeur d’Alene: Fitness Testing December 3, 2017, Oral Board exam and potential polygraph December 4-8, 2017

Pocatello: Fitness Testing December 10, 2017, Oral Board exam panel and potential polygraph December 11-15, 2017

Meridian: Fitness Testing December 17, 2017, Oral Board exam panel and potential polygraph December 18-22, 2017

Final selected candidates attend the 18-week ATC which includes all POST basic curriculum. On-site training is held in Meridian, Idaho and is anticipated to begin in July 2018.

Idaho State Police Drug Policy

Idaho State Police does not consider for employment, nor accept as a volunteer, any person who has:

  • Used or possessed within the 5-year period immediately preceding application for ISP employment: LSD, PCP, heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine, or designer drugs (e.g. ecstasy, synthetic cathinones, their chemical derivatives and synthetic equivalents, etc.); if use was prior to 5 years preceding application for employment, the following factors will be considered:

    (1) the frequency of the behavior;
    (2) the quantity of drugs involved; and
    (3) the type of drug;
  • Used or possessed within the 3-year period immediately preceding application of ISP employment: marijuana, inhalants (huffing), anabolic steroids, hallucinogens (psilocybin mushrooms), or synthetic cannabinoids (e.g. spice, K2, etc.);
  • On any occasion illegally manufactured or delivered a controlled substance;
  • Used any illegal drug while employed in any law enforcement or prosecutorial agency;
  • Been found guilty by a court or jury of driving under the influence of intoxicants within the 5-year period preceding application for ISP employment;
  • Abused prescription drugs (case by case analysis).

Other involvement with illegal drugs may be a disqualifier. The Colonel of the Idaho State Police has the authority to make all final hiring decisions.

Also please note: ISP's procedure states that visible tattoos on the head, neck, or hands are prohibited and must either be removed or covered by an acceptable means that does not deter from the professional image.
