Please note changes have been made to this exam to include the standards required for the Department’s compliance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) of 2003. You must complete both exams attached to this announcement to be considered for this position.

The Idaho Department of Correction is the 3rd largest employer in Idaho state government. This announcement will be used to fill a current opening at the Idaho State Correctional Center (ISCC) in Boise. The IDOC Robert Janss School is a state-accredited school that offers training for offenders in the following areas: Literacy, Professional Technical Education, Secondary Education, Elementary Education, and Special Education. Educational programs recognize achievements through certifications and diplomas which are also recognized by employers and other educational entities. Applicants must be willing to work in a correctional environment and will be required to work in direct contact with offenders both one-on-one and in a group setting.

  • Provide individual and group instruction in vocational skills to inmates in a state correctional facility
  • Determine educational goals and appropriate instructional methods
  • Develop curriculum, plan class activities and obtain supplies for class
  • Assess student needs and capabilities
  • Administer and interpret diagnostic tests
  • Evaluate student's progress and behavior and prepare reports
  • Counsel students regarding educational program and personal problems
  • Identify educational and behavioral objectives
  • Provide input to staff regarding educational and behavioral objectives
  • Coordinate student's vocational goals with overall educational program
  • Consult with other instructors on course development and student progress
  • Monitor student's behavior to maintain discipline and ensure safety and security of fellow students, self, staff, equipment, and materials
  • Consult with other agencies and organizations regarding student progress and behavior
  • Maintain student records and prepare conduct reports
  • Escort students to and from living units


  • Candidates must be eligible for an Idaho Standard Secondary Education Certificate; OR eligible for an Occupational Specialist Certificate; OR Have a Bachelor's degree and two years’ experience teaching individuals in a group setting


  • Possess or be willing to obtain the Idaho Teaching Credential within 3 years of employment


  • Assessing client's needs and developing education plans which is typically gained by developing Individual Education Plans (IEP's), Employability Development Plans (EDP's), case plans and/or systematic evaluation of students or clients; experience reviewing documents and records; use of or education in standardized testing and measurement instruments; and knowledge of career development techniques, interest inventories, and aptitude testing instruments
  • Behavioral intervention and/or peer group interaction problem-solving techniques which are typically gained by having a counseling background, advanced counseling degree, or education or experience in applied behavioral intervention/problem solving techniques; education in social sciences, communication, or related areas
  • Adapting curriculum to meet adult offender needs which is typically gained by working with adults, high risk populations, or school drop-out; experience in life skills curriculum development; and experience in individualized instruction for special populations
  • Experience as an Idaho Standard Elementary/Secondary Education or Special Education instructor a plus
  • Currently employed with IDOC or at an adult correctional facility in Idaho
  • Certification in English/Language Arts is preferred


To be hired, candidates will have a history and background supportive of department mission goals and will be subject to:

  • Completing a Background Investigation Questionnaire and pre-employment drug testing
  • Having a federal and state criminal background check to include fingerprints
  • Having a history of law-abiding behavior
  • Felonies, misdemeanors, illegal drug usage, DUI's, adverse driving convictions and employment history may make you ineligible for employment

Non-hiring restrictions are in place for candidates who:

  • Have been convicted of Domestic Violence or similar types of violent behaviors
  • Have a dishonorable discharge from military service
  • Currently are using, dealing or are associated with illegal drugs
  • Have close friends or relatives under IDOC care & custody where the vacancy exists
  • Are currently under IDOC supervision or probation (must be released from IDOC supervision or probation for at least one year)


  • Part 1 - PRISON RAPE ELIMINATION ACT (PREA): In compliance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) of 2003, we are required to obtain certain information in the exam/interview process and consider specific information when making hiring and selection decisions for positions that have contact with inmates "in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility, or other institution..." The PREA Standards do not require we obtain this information for positions not within a correctional facility such as Probation & Parole and Central Office positions. Again, these changes are being implemented in order for the department to the meet the requirement of PREA standards.   • Part 2 - You will receive a score based on your education and experience in the answers to the exam including your customized resume. A minimum score of 66 is required to pass. Notification of your test results will be available online when the exam review process has been completed. All answers to the questions on the exam must be supported in the work history, resume, and/or education portion of your application.
