The Mission of the Idaho Department of Correction (IDOC) is to protect the public, our staff, and those within our custody and supervision through safety, accountability, partnerships and providing opportunities for offender change

Please note changes have been made to this exam to include the standards required for the Department’s compliance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) of 2003. You must complete both exams attached to this announcement to be considered for this position.

This recruitment will be used to fill the current vacancy at the Idaho State Correctional Institute (ISCI) in Boise, Idaho and may be used to fill future vacancies in the Boise area for IDOC only. This position will facilitate on-going treatment for offenders with mental illness in a correctional setting. Incumbents must be willing to work directly with offenders in the mental health unit of a state correctional facility. Work hours may include shifts and weekends.

  • Conduct therapeutic activities and co-facilitate group therapy sessions with offenders
  • Interact with offenders one-on-one or in a group setting to encourage appropriate behavior
  • Provide input into developing and changing offender treatment plans
  • Observe offenders behaviors, personal hygiene activities, interaction with others, and response to treatment
  • Record behaviors and treatment progress
  • Implement treatment strategies as part of a treatment team
  • Integrate daily living tasks with treatment goals
  • Encourage and motivate offenders, foster increased self-esteem through teaching and role modeling
  • Facilitate problem solving

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Some knowledge of human services to include psychology, nursing, or social work

This is typically met by:

Completion of college coursework in psychology, nursing, or social work; OR 6 months’ work experience in dual diagnosis, behavioral interventions, mental health disorders and medications, psychiatric symptoms or therapeutic communications; OR Satisfactorily completing a psychiatric technician training program through Idaho State School & Hospital, State Hospital North or State Hospital South; OR At least six months of work experience providing treatment services for the mentally ill.

Specialty Requirement:

  • Willingness to work at a State Correctional Institution.


To be hired, candidates will have a history and background supportive of department mission goals and hiring will be subject to:

  • Completing a Background Investigation Questionnaire and pre-employment drug test
  • Having a federal and state criminal background check to include fingerprints
  • Having a history of law-abiding behavior
  • Felonies, misdemeanors, illegal drug usage, DUI's, adverse driving convictions and employment history may make you ineligible for employment

Non-hiring restrictions are in place for candidates who:

  • Have been convicted of Domestic Violence or similar types of violent behaviors
  • Have a dishonorable discharge from military service
  • Currently are using, dealing or are associated with illegal drugs
  • Have close friends or relatives under IDOC care & custody may also make you ineligible for employment
  • Are currently under IDOC supervision or probation (must be released from IDOC supervision or probation for at least one year)


You will receive a score based on your education and experience in the answers to the exam. A minimum score of 70 is required to pass. Notification of your test results will be available online when the exam review process has been completed. All answers to the questions on the exam must be supported in the work history, resume, and/or education portion of your application.


In compliance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) of 2003, we are required to obtain certain information in the exam/interview process and consider specific information when making hiring and selection decisions for positions that have contact with inmates "in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility, or other institution." The PREA Standards do not require we obtain this information for positions not within a correctional facility such as Probation & Parole and Central Office positions. Again, these changes are being implemented in order for the department to the meet the requirement of PREA standards.
