Position Overview

The purpose of this position is to assist professional provider staff in providing medical care for University Health Services patients. Perform back office medical care including patient care, phlebotomy, medication refills and administration, injections, routine lab testing, assisting with minor procedures and other functions and duties that comply with all state and federal regulations and requirements for the position of Certified/Registered Medical Assistant.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Non-clinical Functions and Duties: 1.Specialty Student Campaigns: assist with campus immunization clinics, specific screening tests for programs using standing orders per Medical Director. 2. Non-patient care: autoclaving, cleaning instruments/equipment, exam room stocking, inventory maintenance, OSHA compliance testing and QA participation. Phone calls to patients and outside pharmacies. 3. Assure linen supplies for the clinic and Massage on a daily/weekly basis and work with supervisor to adjust inventory numbers as needed. Interface with linen vendor. 4. Autoclave spore testing record keeping. 5. Proficiency testing record keeping for nursing staff and providers. Assure that the tests are completed and sent in on a timely basis. 6. Other non-clinical duties as assigned.

  • General Care and Lab Duties 1.Room patients and prepare for provider exams; e.g., all vital signs, weights, gowning, eye chart examinations, surgical tray set up and assistance with procedures. 2.General patient care: e.g. ear irrigation, eye exam, EKG’s, nebulizer treatments., respiratory treatments and testing including spirometry, pulse oxymetry, assisting with minor surgical procedures. 3.Refill medications based on medical provider orders, administer medications via appropriate routes per medical provider orders. 4. Blood drawing (phlebotomy): e.g. centrifuge blood tubes, fill out lab requisition forms, prepare specimens for transport to outside lab services, perform CLIA tests in-house, assist with special screening tests required by students for specific academic programs. 5. Injections: e.g. immunization, allergy, antibiotics, TB skin tests, medication administration including contraceptives per medical provider written orders. 6. Other clinical duties as assigned.


  • Successful completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program AND certification or registration by either the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) or American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA). 
  • LPN license will be accepted in lieu of AAMA or AMT or ARMS certification.


  • Knowledge of medical clinic policies and procedures regarding patient care. HIPAA, and other legal parameters of a medical clinic.
  • Experience administering injections/treatments, performing phlebotomies, performing EKG's and assisting provider during examinations as needed; assisting with minor surgical procedures involving knowledge of sterilization techniques and infection control; performing lab proficiency testing, running in-house lab tests, preparing outside lab specimens and checking lab orders and bills for accuracy.
  • 2 years of experience working in a clinical or medical office is preferred.
  • Cultural fit with the rest of the group. High level empathy with the campus population. Background with a 'like' population.
  • Experience using electronic medical records and other common computer programs, such as Microsoft Office.
