Eastern Idaho Public Health has an opening for a full time Environmental Health Specialist 1 in the Idaho Falls office. 


  • Incumbents learn to utilize environmental and public health statutes, rules, ordinances, policies, procedures, and processes, as well as how to determine the existence and cause of environmental health risks, violations, recommend solutions and corrective actions, and ensure compliance through education, negotiation, warning letters, permit suspensions, revocations, and embargoes.
  • Incumbents learn and utilize processes to collect, analyze, and test, food, water, soil, air, and other material samples to determine pollution or contamination during inspections, surveys, and investigations of food establishments, water supplies, day care facilities, solid waste and sewage disposal systems, land development and recreation sites, and respond to public health emergencies; learns and utilizes training to operate and maintain testing equipment, instruments and detection devices utilized during inspection and data analysis.
  • Incumbents learn and apply fundamental processes to review plans and specifications for food establishments, subdivisions, land development, solid waste facilities, and individual and community water and sewage disposal systems, as well as how to issue permits, prepare reports of case facts and findings, and present oral testimony. Incumbents learn how to promote public awareness of environmental laws, rules and standards, and learn to provide consultation, education and technical assistance regarding public health laws.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences OR successful completion of a college level algebra or higher math course and 30 semester/45 quarter hours in the basic sciences, i.e. biology, chemistry, physics, or other physical sciences as well as sanitary engineering or environmental engineering.
  • Valid driver's license
