Maintenance Craftsman

The Idaho Department of Agriculture is currently recruiting for a Maintenance Craftsman located in the Boise office. If you have already applied under announcement #06634019100, you are still being considered for the position and do not need to apply again.

General Information:

Incumbent will supervise and work with janitorial staff and support the building maintenance foreman. Ideal candidates will have mechanical, general electrical, plumbing, and painting skills. 

Responsibilities:

  • Electrical: Maintains and repairs panels, circuits, wiring, receptacles, and switches; Replaces motors, fans, lights, starters, ballasts, and auxiliary heat systems; Repairs extension cords; changes light bulbs; assists journeyman electricians in new installations.
  • Plumbing: Maintains and repairs faucets, sinks, drains, toilets, tubs, water heaters and water service and drain lines; unplugs drain systems; repairs leaks and installs washers; cuts and threads or sweats pipe; repairs pipes on heat systems; assists journeyman plumbers in the installation and remodeling of plumbing systems.
  • Carpentry: Builds partitions and walls, installs windows, door frames, stairways and railings; hangs doors; repairs damaged wall surfaces; builds and sets forms and pours and finishes concrete; builds fences and gates.
  • HVAC: Maintains and repairs heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems; monitors boiler room by reading gauges for pressure and records in log book; checks and repairs leaks in heating/cooling systems; replaces thermostats, control and zone valves and power heads; changes/washes filters. 
  • Maintain parking areas.
  • Explain priorities for completion of projects; resolve problems associated with staff assignments; schedule jobs to be accomplished; insure safe working conditions for customers and staff; train others in proper and safe way to perform custodial services and operate/maintain equipment; review work to insure compliance with standards; keep records of employees' hours worked; inventory and order supplies and materials; insure room availability and event schedules are followed.
  • Perform and lead others in heavy-duty cleaning of offices, locker rooms, and lavatories; clean, sanitize, and polish bath, lavatory, shower, and sink fixtures; dust, mop, wax, shampoo furniture, woodwork, walls, windows, and glass; remove waste and debris; select products and cleaning compounds measure and mix compounds, disinfectants, and sanitizing agents and applies them according to procedures or manufacturers' specifications;  sweep, strip, seal, and wax floors; set up tables, chairs, and similar items for events; remove adhesives, tiles, and carpet; refinish floors and prepares them for re-carpeting or special flooring; move furniture, appliances, and other heavy items; sets up and climbs ladders and scaffolding; shovel snow; maintains sprinkler systems; mow lawns, trimwork, outside clean-up, and report building maintenance needs.
  • Operate scrubbing, buffing, shampooing, vacuuming, and wet/dry pickup machines; perform routine and preventative maintenance on cleaning equipment; finish floors using sanders, strippers, and final finishers; use snow blowers, mowers, forklifts, tractors, snowplows, saws, hysters, dollies, and carts; replace belts, brushes, and bearings in power equipment; insure that floor and building area is secured including doors locked and lights and appliances off.
  • Conducts preventative maintenance on building devices and systems.
  • Maintains hand and power tools associated with mechanics, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and general building maintenance.

Minimum Qualifications: These qualifications are mandatory requirements.

  • Some knowledge of heating and cooling system maintenance and repair
  • Experience performing semi-skilled maintenance and repair involving carpentry, plumbing, electrical and general building maintenance trades work
  • Experience using and maintaining tools and equipment normally associated with carpentry, mechanics, plumbing, and electrical work

Specialty Qualifications: This qualification is a mandatory requirement.

  • A valid driver's license
