Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Installs, maintains, and repairs heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems ranging from 1 to 40 tons. Including refrigeration, combustion and electrical components of the system.

Monitors HVAC systems and operations, and ensures that routine preventive maintenance is performed according to established schedules and standards.

Responds to hot and cold calls, then troubleshoot and resolve issues.

Checks, repairs and/or replaces valves, motors, controls, switches, gauges, wiring, fans, pumps, compressors, condensers, cores, pipes and other functional components of the system.

Maintains air distribution and balance systems, installs and inspects thermostats and electrical wiring of furnaces, unit heaters and cooling units.

Performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures.

Documents all work in the CMMS system.

Enforces all Boise State University safety and risk management policies and procedures; reports all accidents and injuries in a timely manner and identifies and corrects unsafe work conditions with management oversight.

Attends training programs (classroom and virtual) as designated.

Participate in the “on-call” rotation

May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: 

Charging, starting, and checking for proper operation of HVAC type equipment and related devices;

Troubleshooting and repairing digital electronic and pneumatic HVAC control systems;

Starting, stopping, and troubleshooting chiller operations and chilled water systems;

Modifying and/or installing natural gas and water piping;

Operating, maintaining, diagnosing problems, and repairing industrial type HVAC systems and control devices;

Performing basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and sheet metal work; welding and repairing material and brazing pipe; cutting, brazing and soldering high pressure refrigerant piping.

Must have a valid driver’s license

Must be able to meet the following criteria to be considered for the position:

Accumulated less than, nine (9) or more points within the past (36) months (see IDPA 39.02.71) on their Idaho driver’s license record

Accumulated a total of less than one-half the points that would trigger suspension or revocation of the driver’s license on their out-of-state or international driver’s license record

Has not had a suspended or revoked driver’s license within the past three (3) years for driving-related conduct whether or not involving a University Vehicle

Has not had a conviction, plea of guilty, withheld judgment, or other determination of fault (“Conviction”) for an alcohol or drug-related offense while driving within the past (3) years

Does not have two (2) or more convictions, pleas of guilty, withheld judgments, or determinations of fault (“Conviction”) for alcohol or drug related offences while driving

Selected applicant will be required to obtain an EPA universal certification for technicians and a HVAC Journeyman License within 6 months of employment.

Must be able to work nights, weekends and some holidays.

Preferred Qualifications:

High School diploma, GED or equivalent experience

HVAC Apprenticeship or equal work experience as journeyman

4 or more years of related work experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Ability to braze and soft solder

Understand wiring diagrams and operational sequence of HVAC/R equipment.

Presents self in a highly professional manner to others and understands that honesty and ethics are essential.

Ability to maintain a positive attitude.

Ability to communicate with co-workers and other departments with professionalism and respect.

Maintains a professional relationship with all coworkers, vendor representatives, supervisors, managers, customers, and client representatives.

Must have basic phone and computer skills (email, texting, etc.).

Good attention to detail.

Ability to work well under pressure.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Excellent time management and organizational skills.

Ability to work well alone and in a team.

Willingness to be open to learning and growing.

Maturity of judgment and behavior.

Maintains high standards for work areas and appearance.

Ability to work a flexible schedule and participate in the “on-call” rotation

Physical Requirements:

Close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus, with or without corrective lenses.

Significant walking or other means of mobility.

Ability to work in a standing position for long periods of time (up to 8 hours).

Ability to reach, bend, stoop, push and/or pull, and frequently lift up to 90 pounds

Must be able to see color differentiation

Working Conditions:

Working both indoor and outdoor setting exposed to elements indoor setting

Varying schedule to include evenings, holidays, weekends and extended hours as business dictates.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is primarily in a controlled, temperate environment; however, may be exposed to heat/cold during support of outside activities.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

Wears protective clothing required by the work environment or governmental regulations.
