Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) is recruiting for a Sign Fabricator to join our Mobility Services team at our Headquarters office in Boise. This position could be the perfect career opportunity if you have excellent interpersonal skills and enjoy working in a fast paced, detail oriented environment. This position will be responsible for design, lay-out, and fabrication of traffic control and informational signs for state highways and/or to be used in a sign and graphics shop to produce a variety of signs.


Incumbents in the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD)’s highway sign and graphics shop are frequently exposed to toxic chemicals, fumes, noise, carpentry dust, power tool and moving machinery and are therefore required to wear protective safety equipment including goggles, respirator, face shield, and ear protector.
NOTE: This position requires a valid driver’s license.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Screen printing/reflective sheeting
  • Performs screen printing of traffic-control and related signs in accordance with federal and state guidelines;
  • Applies silk to screen equipment;
  • Applies reflective sheeting to various substrate materials by using automated and manual squeeze roll applicators.
Sign Fabrication
  • Designs, lays out, and fabricates large, extruded, aluminum interstate and defense highway signs in accordance with federal and state specifications;
  • Design, lay out and fabricate a variety of signs for business use in compliance with institutional, state and federal signage;
  • Performs carpentry and sheet metal duties in the manufacture of metal, fiber-reinforced plastic, and plywood substrate materials;
  • Operates and maintains all associated equipment to include wood- and metal-cutting band saws, circular saws, drill presses, punches, finishing machines, grinders, joiners, planers, routers, scroll saws, pneumatic drills, rivet guns, metal shears, and corner machines;
  • Lays out and completes final fabrication of special signs using die and scroll-cut legends conforming to Federal Highway Administration standard alphabets and spacing requirements;
  • Manufactures screen-printing frames;
  • May perform leadwork duties.
Design and layout
  • Operates and maintains PC -based computer-aided design/manufacturing systems for traffic sign and/or business sign fabrication to include various software (Roland Versacamm, Sign Cad, CorelDraw, Flexi-Letter, Flexi-Sign) and database programs, scanners, digitizing tablets, printers and plotters, plotter cutters, engravers and special fonts and text for highway signs;
  • Lays out and fabricates special and large diagrammatic signs;
  • Uses specialized equipment materials to lay out and manufacture stencils and screens for printing:
  • Provide digital proof for customer review and approval.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Some knowledge of the characteristics and uses of various materials for sign fabrication.
  • Experience: using hand and power tools and equipment associated with sign fabrication.
  • Physical ability to: frequently bend and stoop; lift and carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds; stand on concrete floor for up to 4 hours during a normal shift.

Specialty Areas:

  • Experience - will be required to operate a small truck and forklift;
  • Experience operation PC based design software and digital wide-format printers and plotters.
