The Idaho State Tax Commission is recruiting for a part-time Tax Compliance Officer 1 in Pocatello in the Field Collections Bureau

This position will be filled on a temporary part-time basis for an indefinite duration. The flexible work schedule is 19.5 hours per week with a non-negotiable starting salary of $15.87 per hour.

This position does not have benefits. Temporary positions are exempt from classified state service, the rules of the Division of Human Resources, and the Idaho Personnel Commission. 

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Collection:  Incumbents enforce Idaho tax laws including the assessment and collection of taxes. They interview individuals to obtain facts and research a variety of sources to obtain financial information. They consult with the taxpayer or their representative and advise them that liens, levies and warrants may be executed. They negotiate the seizure of assets such as bank accounts, pay checks, personal assets and other liquid assets. Individuals at this level also secure taxpayer financial statements and obtain and verify information for closing agreements.
  • Investigation/Inspection:  Incumbents in this position will visit taxpayers unannounced and review their financial records to determine the correct tax liability. They perform research and interpret applicable rules, laws and relevant business or individual financial information. They advise individuals and business owners of tax liability and monetary fines for failure to pay.
  • Technical Assistance and Education:  Incumbents provide technical assistance to individuals with tax questions and make presentations on tax laws. They represent the Idaho State Tax Commission at temporary events where retail sales are being made such as vendors' fairs, home and garden shows, concerts, gun shows and/or vendor-sponsored events to educate taxpayers and issue permits.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Some knowledge of: bookkeeping; negotiation or sales technique and strategy
  • Experience: using basic math skills in a business setting; using computer programs such as Word and Excel; conducting Internet research in a college or business setting; interpreting technical material such as spreadsheets and/or financial statements or laws and rules; independently handling complaints and upset individuals in a business setting; preparing written reports documenting activities and actions taken; conducting and documenting fact-finding interviews
  • A valid driver's license OR ability to meet the transportation needs required for these positions
