Idaho Transportation Department is dedicated to having a Constructive Culture while focusing on the transportation needs of the people of Idaho. This may be your opportunity to put your Geographic Information System knowledge, skills and experience to work for the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD). The statewide Geospatial Information Systems team is responsible for providing geographic information products and services through the development of spatially enabled applications, databases, mapping products, analysis, education and technical support. This position will support ITD GIS efforts, the Local Road Inventory program, the ArcGIS Online environment, mobile GIS and the Linear Referencing System.

This announcement will be used to fill the current opening for a GIS Analyst in our District 3 office located in Boise.   • Create, update and maintain relational databases of highway related GIS information such as roadway assets and road features, and roadway centerline geometry.
  • Create map products, including digital, hard-copy and web.
  • Work with GPS and/or mobile GIS equipment to conduct data inventories, data maintenance and field inspections. This may also include training others in the use of GPS.
  • Develop scripts or programs as needed to automate data and map creation and maintenance.
  • Complete data conversion tasks, including spatial enabling of tabular data, and publication using ArcGIS Server and web GIS technology.
  • Configure web GIS applications, including widgets.
  • Conduct training for ITD personnel in the use of GIS.
  • Support ArcGIS Server, including services and web GIS tools. Provide support to applications that consume GIS information.
  • Coordinate with a statewide user base to maintain accurate local road data, including regular and routine outreach and communication with roughly 100 local road agencies in Idaho.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Some knowledge of computer programming languages or any object-oriented language commonly used in the development of GIS programs.
  • Some knowledge of principles of database design and management.
  • Good knowledge of geographic information systems.
  • Good knowledge of cartographic principles.
  • Experience operating, applying, and programming ESRI software products in a work environment.

Specialty Areas:

Some positions may require one or more of the following specialty areas:

  • Linear Referencing Systems.
Experience in:
  • Creating spatial Internet applications.
  • Managing and editing linear-referencing systems.
  • Managing and editing geospatial datasets.
  • Geospatial and Geostatistical analyses and modeling.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of using maps, feature, and image services.
  • Some experience directing and coordinating collection of field data.
  • Experience coordinating tasks with a large user group.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Knowledge of GIS architecture.
  • Knowledge of transportation systems.
  • Some experience with GPS and mobile GIS equipment.
  • Some knowledge of Computer Aided Drafting.
  • Experience in transportation industry.
  • Experience with teaching/training adults in one-on-one or group settings.
