This position is responsible for the design and maintenance of telemetered hydrologic monitoring sites.  Additional responsibilities include site selection and development of equipment specifications.  The design work will be for (but not limited to) water measuring devices such as weirs or flumes and/or other devices and for determining the best method for transferring the data collected at each site and sending it to a data collection location. 

This position requires the ability to troubleshoot equipment installed by the department and, on occasion, equipment that has been installed by partners both on site and over the phone. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining inventory of parts, keeping equipment firmware and programs up to date, performing minor repairs of equipment, and keeping assigned work areas organized. The position also requires the measurement of surface water discharge from springs, streams, drains, canals and groundwater wells.  The incumbent will assist with or be responsible for the writing of Memoranda of Agreement with partners.

There is one (1) position opening. The location of this position will either be in Boise or Twin Falls.  


Good knowledge of engineering principles  

Experience reading and interpreting schematics and drawings.

Experience in general electronics and electro-mechanical devices

Experience trouble-shooting and repairing scientific monitoring systems including data loggers, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), cell phone and radio modems

Experience using global positioning system (GPS) equipment and using geographic information system (GIS) software 


Bachelors Degree in Engineering or in Physical Science with 2 years of experience, Associate Degree in Applied Science (electronics) with 5 years experience or military radio training with 5 years experience

Ability to lift 60 lbs and to climb 100 ft. antenna towers if necessary

Knowledge of farm irrigation systems

Good analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills

Basic knowledge of high voltage systems

Proficiency with MS Office for compiling data and writing reports

Experience measuring surface water flows and groundwater

Basic knowledge of shop and electrical safety

Experience in the use of drill presses, cutoff saws and other types of shop equipment
