The Department of Water Resources currently has one (1) opening for WR Agent / WR Agent Senior LIMITED SERVICE position in Idaho Falls.  Length of limited service appointments are determined by the availability of funds such as grants, alternative funding sources or timeframes such as pilot projects or program termination.  Appointments to a limited service position have permanent classified status (with limited layoff rights) after successful completion of entrance probation.  Updated limited service agreements are required every two (2) years.

The Water Resource Agent position is used for recruitment and training purposes for the Water Resource Agent, Senior. Typically the Senior level requires 2 years' experience as a Water Resource Agent or equivalent work experience.  Upon completion of training, the employee will be paid at the Water Resource Agent, Senior level.  If you meet the minimum qualifications for the Water Resource Agent, Senior position, apply to the Water Resource Agent Senior position announcement # 03137016503.

Typical Responsibilities:

  • Conducts field examinations to measure the quantity of water diversion and determine location, method, purpose and frequency of appropriation.
  • Interprets legal descriptions, survey plats, aerial photographs and maps to locate points of diversion and place of use.
  • Reviews various department regulatory program applications for compliance with state and federal laws and regulations and department policies.
  • Investigates unauthorized water diversions and water rights disputes.
  • Conducts stream flow measurements.
  • Explains water laws and regulations to the public.
  • Prepares, orders, and issues violation notices.
  • Evaluates new-uses applications, amendments, transfers and claims pertaining to water appropriations and recommends appropriate action.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Good knowledge of hydrology, hydrogeology, hydraulics, and / or water measurement techniques for determining water quantity parameters.
  • Some knowledge of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry to calculate water flow rates, pump efficiencies, water storage capacity, and/or land areas.
  • Experience interpreting public land survey legal descriptions.
  • Valid driver's license.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Background with aerial photography, satellite imagery, global positioning systems, or geographic information systems.
