Idaho Transportation Department is recruiting for an experienced Engineering Assistant, Transportation Staff to join our Traffic Section in District 3, Boise. Under the general direction of a licensed Professional Engineer, the incumbent will be responsible for traffic plans sheet reviews, permitting non-departmental sign requests, and to provide traffic training and support to District 3 design/construction groups.



  • Maintain traffic plan sheet templates and provide support to design/construction groups for MUTCD questions.
  • Develop traffic scoping reports for each proposed ITIP project to define phasing needs, type of traffic control, cost estimate and additional safety concerns.
  • Use CADD software to design traffic control plans, striping plans and signing plans as requested.
  • Perform traffic plan sheet reviews (signing, striping, delineation, traffic control, etc) at preliminary, intermediate and final design.
  • Maintain and update District 3’s GIS approach database.
  • Lead and coordinate IDAPA access discussions on ITIP projects.
  • Review and approve utility permits in compliance with all federal, state, and local requirements and regulations.
  • Administer District 3’s LOGO, Accident Memorial and Tourist Oriented Destination sign permit programs to include processing and annual billing.
  • Research and respond to traffic related public inquiry requests; 

    *Please note that all duties and responsibilities listed are performed under general direction of a licensed Professional Engineer.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Some knowledge of supervisory practices.
  • Valid Driver's license.

Experience in:

  • Applying engineering principles and practices in two of the following three areas--highway design/drafting projects, highway construction, or highway maintenance;
  • Interpreting and applying federal, state, and local laws and regulations pertinent to highway projects;
  • Making oral presentations.
  • You will receive a score based on your answers
  • You must receive a minimum rating of 70 to pass this examination
  • Exam results will be available online when the review process is complete
  • All answers to the questions on the checklist must be supported in the work history, resume, and/or education portion of your application
