Idaho Transportation Department is currently recruiting for a Land Surveyor-in-Training position in Lewiston, Idaho.  Incumbents in this position will work under the supervision of a Professional Land Surveyor and receive on-the-job structured training for a minimum of four years to meet the prerequisites for licensure as a Professional Land Surveyor.   Upon completion of training, the employee will be paid at the Land Surveyor, Transportation level ($22.93 - $28.66 per hour).

Incumbents will be required to work in all weather conditions, near high-volume traffic, stand or walk for long periods, and carry up to 40 pounds of surveying equipment over rough and steep terrain. Positions may require considerable travel, some overnight.

This position requires a valid drivers license.


  • Performs work on surveys required for the location, design and construction of highways, bridges and other structures;
  • Assists in preparing legal descriptions of surveyed lands and property survey plats to be filed with County Recorder;
  • Serves as crew chief for land survey crews and supervises surveying field and office activities;
  • Assists in the preparation of project concept reviews;
  • Provides technical assistance and explains technical surveying matters to others of varying experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Certification as a Land Surveyor-in-training as outlined in Title 54, Chapter 12, Section 54-1208, Idaho Code (Idaho Board of Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors).
  • Good knowledge of: fundamental surveying principles and practices involved in planning, design and construction of highways.
