Performs paraprofessional library work involving service to patrons, or maintenance of library collection and database; or acquisitions, cataloging and classifications; or interlibrary loan; to provide lead work in a specialized library function; perform related work.


A.        Perform bibliographic verification of materials requested by bibliographers: searches library online system to identify duplicate requests, determine the need for additional volumes and new editions of requested materials.
B.        Searches external database (OCLC) to determine most accurate catalog record for requested materials, downloads that record into library online system to be used for attaching ordering and holdings information. Verifies publication date, ISBN, author, title, publisher, volume or edition number.
C.         Searches vendor’s database to determine availability and price.  Retrieves requests submitted to vendor’s database by bibliographers.
Communicates with publishers/vendors to determine further information for materials requested that cannot be otherwise verified.
E.         Search other databases to determine availability, price.  Identify most cost effective way of acquiring materials and forward those to be acquired through vendor database to Library Assistant III.  Place order for materials to be purchased with purchase card.
Maintains paid invoice physical file for all library collection materials.
Creates and transmits book orders on automated accounting system for requested materials as the need arises or in the absence of the supervisor.
H.        Uses university purchase card appropriately in accordance with procedure to acquire library material.
Retrieve and/or create record of library materials request on vendor system including fund and bibliographer information.
Maintain “tickler” system for library materials not available, not yet published or out-of-print.
Claims and cancels orders when the need arises, or in the absence of the supervisor.
Performs other responsibilities and duties as assigned by supervisors and the University Librarian.
M.        Participates in appropriate library activities, such as serving on committees and task forces. Participates in general and departmental staff meetings.


Good knowledge of: current library organization, terminology and functions.

Some knowledge of: supervisory practices.

Experience: using and applying bibliographic and other library information sources, in printed and computerized format; using a bibliographic utility or in-house automated library system to perform acquisitions, cataloging or serials work; compiling and analyzing information and writing a summary in a work setting; using computer applications software.
