Applications are now being accepted for Safety & Security Officers to fill a current vacancy in our Lewiston facility.

If you have previously applied for Safety & Security Officer, DJC you will need to reapply.  Previous scores will not be used.

  • Ensure the safety and security of staff and juveniles at a Juvenile Corrections Center,
  • Patrol campus and conduct building checks,
  • Physically control dangerous and combative youth,
  • Train staff and monitor compliance in safety and security,
  • Complete documentation and prepare safety and security logs, records and reports, and
  • Transport juveniles to and from other facilities, medical and other appointments
  • These positions require shift work, which may include graveyard shift, weekend and holiday work. Employees are expected to cover shifts as needed or assigned. Employees who work shift or nights may receive 5% shift differential.  To be considered for these positions you must mark that you are willing to work Full Time and Shift and Night shift on your application.


  • Some knowledge of safety and security procedures.
  • Experience applying regulations and policies.
  • Experience using a personal computer to maintain online records.
  • Willingness to: deal with violence, harassment, threats, verbal abuse; break up fights, control disturbances, and physically restrain offenders; perform searches for contraband and weapons; work alone unarmed among unrestricted offenders; work in a secure/locked facility in confined spaces; learn and follow department policies, procedures, rules, and instructions; set aside personal prejudices and be fair; work in high-stress, hostile environments; transport juveniles; become certified in CPR.
  • No hearing, sight, or physical limitations that would prevent performance of duties.
  • Must meet the Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) entrance requirements as follows. Also see questions 1 - 10 on the exam.
    • U.S. Citizenship
      • Possession of a valid driver's license
      • High school diploma or GED
      • Two years of post-high school responsible experience
      • Be 21 years of age or older
      • No felony convictions
      • No DUI convictions within the last two years
      • No convictions of crimes of deceit, drugs, or sex crimes within the last 5 years
      • Meet military discharge standards 


  • IMPACT ASSESSMENT: Applicants must be willing to take the IMPACT Assessment examination and receive a passing score in order to be considered for this position. The assessment is designed to test skills and attitude, measuring the overall suitability needed to work with juvenile offenders. It consists of two parts: A Human Relations Video Test (76 question over 75 minutes) and a Reading Test (31 question over 15 minutes).
    • You will receive an e-mail from IDJC with detailed information regarding scheduling and taking the Impact Assessment.  Assessments are given during the announcement period and MUST be taken to be considered for an in person interview.

  • Those selected are required to obtain the Juvenile Corrections Direct Care Staff Certificate through the Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Academy. For information regarding the requirements see the information below under POST REQUIREMENTS.
  • Successful applicants will have several forms to complete as well as answer questions regarding their history of drug and alcohol abuse, and physical, mental and emotional history for POST qualifications.

If selected for an interview, applicants will be required to bring to the interview:
  • Proof of US citizenship.  Acceptable documents are: U.S. city, county or state birth certificate, naturalization certificate, U.S. passport, Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth, or Certificate of Citizenship.
  • Proof of high school diploma/GED or equivalent.  Acceptable documents are High school diploma, GED certificate, HSE (high school equivalency) certificate, high school transcript showing completion of high school, or official college transcripts showing successful completion of 15 or more credits.
  • Military discharge DD-214 Member 4 copy (if applicable).
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Completed POST Application for Certification
NOTE:  In addition to the above documents, applicants invited to interview will receive a POST application that must be completed and brought to the interview in a sealed envelope.  Applicants not providing the POST application will not be allowed to interview.  This document will be kept in Human Resources for 90 days after the end of the hiring process.  The POST application for those applicants who are not offered a job will be destroyed after the 90 day period.


  • The Idaho Department of Juvenile Corrections is a drug-free work environment.  Immediately after a conditional offer of employment has been extended to an applicant (before 5:00 pm of the day of the offer), he or she must test free of drugs as a condition of employment.
  • Upon an offer of conditional employments a hire must complete a criminal history background investigation including, but not limited to, the Idaho State Police Criminal Identification Bureau, FBI, and the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare will be conducted on the successful applicant.  Hires will be required to take and pass a TB test during the first 30 days of employment and pass a medical, vision, and hearing exam within 60 days of employment

The exam for this position is a combination checklist and questions requiring a narrative response. The last question on the exam is for your customized resume.  You will receive a score based on your responses to the questions and willingness statements, provided those responses are supported by the information in the work history, resume, and/or education portion of your application. You must receive a minimum rating of 61 to pass this examination. Exam results are available online when the review process is completed.  A higher rating can be obtained based on the extent of your education and experience, so take your time to provide a detailed and complete answer to each question.  It is very important that the information you provide clearly supports your responses. If your selections are not supported you may not receive a passing exam score and will be removed from consideration.  Applications are reviewed periodically and scores assigned.  Results are available online

The Idaho Department of Juvenile Corrections has regionalized state services for juveniles committed to its custody, making it possible for most juveniles to remain close enough to their communities so parents and other key community members can take part in the juvenile's treatment. State juvenile correctional centers are located in Lewiston, Nampa, and St. Anthony and provide a full complement of services for 268 youth who range from 10 to 20 years of age.
