Please note changes have been made to this exam to include the standards required for the Department’s compliance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) of 2003. You must complete both exams attached to this announcement to be considered for this position.

The IT Information Systems Technician position is a member of the Service Desk team and will function as a field technician based at the South Boise Prisons complex. The purpose of this position is to provide technical support for 6 facilities that employ 1000+ staff. This job reports to the Service Desk Manager.

NOTE: It is required that applicants must have at least one year of full-time experience in the information technology field and meet the listed requirements to be considered for this opening. Experience must have been gained within the last five years to qualify.



  • Installs, configures and maintains hardware and software products
  • Identifies, evaluates and corrects hardware, software, or procedural problems
  • Utilizes standard problem identification and tracking processes
  • Helps define and implement system standards and procedures
  • Helps install network infrastructure equipment
  • Assists with the monitoring and troubleshooting of LAN and WAN related problems
  • Performs technical tasks and projects as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience independently installing, upgrading, and maintaining one or more computer networks including server/host hardware and software and network cabling: LAN/WAN support, resource administration, and troubleshooting
  • Experience independently evaluating and resolving computer, system, and user problems including compatibility conflicts, application operations, hardware malfunctions, and telecommunications problems
  • Experience independently evaluating and defining customer/system needs and recommending and implementing new IT solutions
  • Experience recommending the installation and use of applications and system software

Specialty Qualifications:

  • Must be willing to travel and work at multiple correctional facility locations
  • Must have a valid Driver's License
  • Must be willing and able to lift 50 pounds of equipment


To be hired, candidates will have a history and background supportive of department mission goals and will be subject to:

  • Completing a Background Investigation Questionnaire and pre-employment drug testing
  • Having a federal and state criminal background check to include fingerprints
  • Having a history of law-abiding behavior
  • Felonies, misdemeanors, illegal drug usage, DUI's, adverse driving convictions and employment history may make you ineligible for employment

Non-hiring restrictions are in place for candidates who:

  • Have been convicted of Domestic Violence or similar types of violent behaviors
  • Have a dishonorable discharge from military service
  • Currently are using, dealing or are associated with illegal drugs
  • Have close friends or relatives under IDOC care & custody where the vacancy exists
  • Are currently under IDOC supervision or probation (must be released from IDOC supervision or probation for at least one year)


You must have the minimum level of experience or education described for each question to qualify for this position. Scoring will be based on your responses and information provided. A minimum rating of 70 is needed to pass this examination. Notification of your test results will be available online when the review process is complete.


In compliance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) of 2003, we are required to obtain certain information in the exam/interview process and consider specific information when making hiring and selection decisions for positions that have contact with inmates "in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility, or other institution..." The PREA Standards do not require we obtain this information for positions not within a correctional facility such as Probation & Parole and Central Office positions. Again, these changes are being implemented in order for the department to the meet the requirement of PREA standards.
