The person in this position manages the design elements of a wide variety of park and recreation related site improvements, typically located within the headquarters office in Boise. There is a heavy emphasis on project management including development of project goals/performance criteria, scope, costs, and time lines, as well as: 

  • Managing the design of projects performed by outside licensed design professional consultants.
  • Inspecting and evaluating park and program sites for development.
  • Conceptualizing park and site development plans in comprehensive written and graphic form to establish project feasibility.
  • Preparing written and graphic design development guidelines including site plans, drawings and other documents to describe nature, size and character of projects.
  • Preparing construction documents and specifications for bidding public works contracts.
  • Assuring design compliance with master plans and applicable regulations and building codes.
  • Conducting comprehensive inventory and analysis of sites natural, visual, social, cultural and historical resources and recreation potential.
  • Conducting public meetings for input and information.
  • Presenting conceptual plans for public review and Park Board approval.

Duties may include working in adverse weather, rough terrain and hazardous job site conditions. There is frequent travel within the region and some statewide travel necessitating overnight stays.

  • Considerable knowledge of Architecture and/or Landscape Architecture and/or Civil Engineering. This can be typically gained by possession of a license in Architecture or Landscape Architecture or Civil Engineering; completion of an accredited bachelor's degree in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Civil Engineering OR at least 8 years of practical work experience as an Architect in training or Landscape Architect in training or Civil Engineering in training where at least 50% of the experience was under the supervision of the appropriate licensed design professional. 
  • Preference in the hiring decision will be given to candidates who have good knowledge of principles of park & recreation planning and facility design.  Typically gained through upper division college coursework, or equivalent training, which included researching and evaluating park & recreation needs, preparing environmental assessments, and designing recreation facilities.   


Resume and Portfolio Review: Your customized resume and attached portfolio of completed design work is required and must demonstrate that you meet the minimum qualifications.  If you prefer, you may write a narrative detailing how your qualifications meet the minimum requirements and follow that with a resume and portfolio.  Scoring will be based on your resume/portfolio and/or narrative.
