ITD is currently recruiting for a Transportation Technician Engineer in District 5, located in Pocatello, Idaho. This is an entry level position that will assist in the design and construction of highway projects. The successful candidate will be a self-starter, an enthusiastic learner, and a constructive team member. This is an exciting and challenging career opportunity where ITD will provide on-the-job training giving them the tools and skills necessary to complete the steps of the horizontal career path such that they will ultimately be performing all tasks of highway projects from design to construction.

The Transportation Technician Engineering (TTE) horizontal career path consists of 3 steps (levels) to be completed within 6 years, however, they may be completed sooner. After successful completion of each step, wages may increase as outlined below:
  • Starting wage: $19.81
  • Completion of Step One: $22.01
  • Completion of Step Two: $24.65
  • Completion of Step Three: $27.83
In order to complete each step of the horizontal career path the following performance metrics will be measured:
  • Efficiency and quality of projects;
  • Skills;
  • Training;
  • Experience;
  • Personal Performance and safety.
  • Develop the scope of highway construction projects in the design phase along with preparing and drafting plans, specifications, quantities, and estimates for construction; 
  • Insure the contract requirements are met on construction projects through inspection of contractor work, testing of materials, and providing for the safety of the traveling public and workers;
  • Coordinate project activities with utility companies, property owners, contractors, consultant engineers, municipalities, law enforcement agencies, and other regulatory agencies;
  • Compute, check, and verify quantities, materials, costs, and final contractor payments;
  • May direct others in one or more phases of a highway construction project and may include evaluating work and providing input into performance appraisals.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid driver's license;
  • Good knowledge of computer systems and applications used in engineering/construction and maintenance.
  • Using highway engineering plans, specifications, maps, charts and/or GIS data;
  • Providing direction and training on highway maintenance or construction inspection to others;
  • Identifying and organizing appropriate materials and equipment for maintenance or construction projects.

Desired, but not necessary, Qualifications:

  • Associates degree or two years experience in a construction or design-related field;
  • Experience as a civil drafter/draftsman using CADD and familiarity with MicroStation;
  • Experience as a project inspector or manager.
