The Department of Fish and Game is currently recruiting for a Senior Wildlife Technician - Population opening Clearwater Region Office in Lewiston.

The successful candidate for this opening will assist the Regional Wildlife Manager and Regional Wildlife Biologists to implement wildlife management and monitoring programs in the Clearwater Region. Responsibilities include: providing supervision to seasonal staff; participating in wildlife population surveys, including aerial surveys; interviewing hunters and collecting harvest data at check stations; maintaining survey and harvest databases and preparing preliminary reports; assisting with prevention measures to prevent wildlife depredations on crops; participating in wildlife capture operations; monitoring radio-collared animals; investigating mortalities of radio-collared animals to determine cause of death; interacting with and providing information to the public, including sportsmen and women; enforcing Fish and Game rules and regulations; performing habitat operations and maintenance (i.e., repair fences, signage and roads); using and maintaining equipment (i.e., tractors, ATVs, boats and power tools).

General Information:

  • This announcement will be used to fill the current opening for Wildlife Technician, Senior - Population at the Clearwater Region office in Lewiston. If you have applied for a previously posted announcement for a Wildlife Technician, Senior and would like to be considered for the current opening, you will need to apply to this announcement. Previous exam scores will not be used/merged.
  • Senior Wildlife Population Technicians must able, with or without reasonable accommodations, to work and hike in challenging and adverse terrain and weather conditions, lift and carry items weighing up to 65 lbs., including some long work days, over-night stays, and weekend work.

As a Senior Wildlife Technician your responsibilities may include:

  • Participating in wildlife population surveys, including aerial surveys, interviewing hunters to obtain harvest data at check stations, surveying hunters' opinions, maintaining survey and harvest databases, preparing preliminary reports and occasionally enforce fish and game laws.
  • Serving as an IDFG liaison to the public and other agencies concerning IDFG wildlife and habitat management programs.
  • Using GIS to map animal location data and habitats and conduct simple spatial analyses.
  • Assisting with radio-monitoring of wildlife, including aerial telemetry from small aircraft.
  • Maintain fences, roads, dikes, buildings and grounds. 
  • Safely use and maintain hand tools, power tools, 4WD vehicles, OHVs, farm equipment and heavy equipment.
  • Manage day to day activities in the field and office including budgets, annual reports, maintenance of facilities, and responding to public inquiries.
  • Understanding and applying habitat management and restoration practices including seeding, planting, and noxious weed control.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Good knowledge of wildlife ecology and habitat requirements and some knowledge of habitat development practices and procedures OR good knowledge of biology, zoology, botany, conservation biology or closely related discipline.
  • Experience recording, summarizing or analyzing biological data using a personal computer to manipulate data.
  • Some knowledge of supervisory practices.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Some Senior Wildlife Technician positions throughout the state require the incumbent to possess a CDL or be willing to obtain one within the six-month probationary period (see question #6 on the examination). For those positions requiring a CDL, incumbents must pass a pre-employment controlled substance screening test. Once a CDL is obtained, the employee is required to participate in the Department's drug/alcohol testing program and comply with all of its provisions. Failure to satisfy any of these requirements will result in a failure to complete the probationary period and termination from employment. The position at the Clearwater Region in Lewiston does not require a CDL.
