Serve Idaho, the Governor’s Commission on Service and Volunteerism, will award $3,000 to Operation: Military Kids at the Martin Luther King Jr./Idaho Human Rights Day celebration on Jan. 16. Operation: Military Kids supports children and youth impacted by the deployment of their parents.
To engage over 3,000 volunteers, Serve Idaho is encouraging the community to donate items and personal letters for “Hero Packs” to be given to children up to age 16. Bank of the Cascades, the Idaho Department of Labor, Monkey Bizness and Rediscovered Books will be accepting donations throughout January.
“Hundreds of Idaho children are affected by their parents’ deployments,” Serve Idaho Interim Administrator Gordon Graff said. “Hero Packs are one way the community can support them and recognize their sacrifices.”
The Jan. 16 Day of Service is intended to transform the life and teachings of the late civil rights leader into community service that helps create change in communities. Serve Idaho and other organizations will bring communities together to bridge differences and address issues in economic opportunity, community health, the environment, education and literacy, disaster preparedness and response and support of veterans and military families.
