Serve Idaho Wins Grant for Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service

Serve Idaho, which promotes public service and volunteerism across the state, is one of 17 organizations nationwide to be awarded grants to lead service projects and dialogue on the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.

With the $4,000 grant from Youth Service America, Serve Idaho, the Governor’s Commission on Service and Volunteerism, will partner with Operation: Military Kids to encourage the community to donate items and personal letters for “Hero Packs” to be given to children up to age 16.

“Hundreds of Idaho children are affected by their parents’ deployments,” Serve Idaho Interim Administrator Gordon Graff said. “Hero Packs are one way the community can support them and recognize their sacrifices.”

Donations are being accepted at various locations throughout southwestern Idaho from Jan. 9 through 30.

The Jan. 16. Day of Service is intended to transform the life and teachings of the late civil rights leader into community service that helps create change in communities. Serve Idaho and the other organizations will bring communities together to bridge differences and address issues in economic opportunity, community health, the environment, education and literacy, disaster preparedness and response and support for veterans and military families.
