AmeriCorps Kicks Off Seventh Annual Idaho@Play Week

Idaho’s AmeriCorps members will help combat childhood obesity and mark the seventh annual Idaho@Play week with a series of statewide events in June.

AmeriCorps members will host four free outdoor activities in southwestern Idaho:

  • Monday, June 5, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Comba Park, 2995 N. Five Mile Road, Boise. Members will team up with the Idaho Foodbank to offer a variety of garden related activities for kids including bug hunts, pollinator games and vegetable identification. 

  • Tuesday, June 6, from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Liberty Park, 520 N. Liberty St., Boise. The MK Nature Center will bring its “Backyard Bass” fishing set to the Idaho Foodbank’s Picnic in the Park where kids will be introduced to fishing.    

  • Saturday, June 10, from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Jim Hall Foothills Learning Center, 3188 N Sunset Peak Road, Boise. This free event will be filled with interactive outdoor activities focusing on environmental and public lands education. 

  • Saturday, June 10, from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge, 13751 Upper Embankment Road, Nampa.  Volunteers are needed to help with Kids Fishing Day. Children will be given lessons on the basics of fishing and will go fishing following their lesson.

Five other events are scheduled statewide and include:
  • Friday, June 2, from 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at Prairie Elementary School, 907 Lewiston St., Cottonwood. Last day of school celebration with school dance, outdoor games and lunch. 

  • Saturday, June 3, from 9 a.m. – noon at Sawyers Pond, Emmett. Emmett free fishing day.

  • Saturday, June 3, at 9:30 a.m. at Williams Creek Trails, Salmon. Trail maintenance and a guided hike covering leave no trace ethics and trail building skills. 

  • Friday, June 9, from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. at Palouse-Clearwater Environmental Institute Nature Center, 1040 Rodeo Drive, Moscow. The public is welcome to attend the free “Seasonal Wanderings” event which will include outdoor games, food and summer solstice related activities. 

  • Saturday, June 10, from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Portneuf Wellness Complex, 2375 Olympus Drive, Pocatello. Exercise stations will be available for children of all ages. Materials will be available for parents on healthy snack preparation and keeping their children active during the summer. 

According to a 2011 report done by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the childhood obesity rate in Idaho declined from 12.3 percent to 11.5 percent between 2008 and 2011 for low-income families. The obesity rate for 2- 4-year-olds was 11.5 percent and for 10- 17-year-olds, it was 10.6 percent.

Idaho@Play is a statewide initiative that brings AmeriCorps members and community volunteers together to promote play as a way to combat childhood obesity.
