Idaho Celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. / Human Rights Day Jan. 15

The public is invited to attend a Martin Luther King Jr. / Idaho Human Rights Day ceremony and activities in the State Capitol rotunda, second floor, Monday, Jan. 15, from noon to 1 p.m.

The Boise State University trumpeters will kick off the program at noon followed by a keynote speech from Francisco Salinas, Director for Student Diversity and Inclusion at Boise State University.

The program agenda also includes:

  • Announcement of the winner of the Martin Luther King Jr./Idaho Human Rights Day poetry contest. The winner will read the winning piece.

  • Performance by Ballet Folklórico México Lindo, a community-based Mexican folk dance group based in Nampa.

  • A performance of “Make Them Hear You” by Common Ground, a community chorus and nonprofit organization.

  • Presentation of the governor’s proclamation establishing the 2018 Martin Luther King Jr. / Idaho Human Rights Day.

An informal meet-and-greet with the Idaho Human Rights Commission will take place immediately following the program.

Several community organizations will staff information tables about how their groups support King’s philosophy of actively participating and volunteering in communities through nonviolent campaigns.

The celebration observing this holiday focuses on individual volunteerism as well as reinforces the Human Rights Commission’s commitment to community service as a means to break down social and economic barriers to bring Idaho citizens together.

This event marks the 31st year that Idaho has celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. / Idaho Human Rights Day, first commemoratively and later as a state holiday.
