Treefort Panel to Discuss How Volunteer Opportunities Become Careers

Serve Idaho and the Idaho Department of Labor will hold a “Volunteer to Career” panel March 26 featuring panelists who discovered their dream careers by volunteering.

The free event, scheduled for 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the Owyhee in Boise, is open to the public. The panel includes Colleen Schowalter of the Idaho Foodbank, Juta Geurtsen of Boise Hive, Wyatt Schroeder of CATCH, Curtis Evans of Peregrine Fund, Vanessa Fry of Boise State Public Policy Research Center and Elizabeth Orcutt-Corsentino of Radio Boise & Treefort Music Festival. Boise City Councilman Ben Quintana will moderate.

An interactive volunteer experience is planned from 1 - 6 p.m. on March 26. Nine local non-profits will set up booths during the festival. Festival-goers will be encouraged to “test drive” volunteering and help with service projects.

Outdoor venues will be on Grove Street between 11th and 10th streets directly outside the Treefort Main Stage.

Indoor venues scheduled from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday are as follows:

• Women’s & Children’s Alliance – The Olympic

• Girls to Women – St. Lawrence Gridiron

• Boise Hive at The Watercooler

In addition, The Idaho Foodbank will be at the Olympic from noon-5 p.m. Friday.

Other nonprofits include: CATCH – Charitable Assistance to Community’s Homeless, Idaho Rivers United, The Humane Society, The Peregrine Fund and Big Brothers Big Sisters.

“We’re excited to show festival-goers how they can get involved in volunteering in the community 365 days a year,” said Serve Idaho Program Coordinator Renee Bade.

For example, 20 Boise Young Professionals and 10 Treefort volunteers are building bunk beds prior to the event to be distributed to needy families. Resources for 10 bunk beds have been donated by Franklin Building Supply and organizers are looking for donations of twin-size mattresses, bedding and materials to complete five more. Contact Tayler Tibbitts at (208) 389-6936 or for donation information.
