Idaho Falls Labor Office to Offer Free Computer Classes

Free classes in basic computer skills are being offered at the Idaho Department of Labor office, 1515 E. Lincoln Road in Idaho Falls beginning Wednesday, July 26. Training is being provided by the College of Eastern Idaho in conjunction with Labor.

“In today’s job market, basic computer skills are imperative in order for job seekers to compete for any job. Anyone who is unable to upload a resume and use email because they are not familiar with how to use a computer will be at a severe disadvantage,” said Labor Department regional manager Connie Gardner. “Without basic computer knowledge you limit your job opportunities, but more importantly, you limit your job seeking opportunities.”

Classes are scheduled for 9-11 a.m. and 2-4 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays. Courses will be offered on an ongoing basis with the course schedule repeating every four weeks. Each class focuses on different aspects of computer usage including learning basic computer skills, information literacy, Microsoft Word, Windows, email, navigating the Web and social media. While each class is intended to stand alone so people do not have to attend every class, some of the later classes require additional knowledge.

Class descriptions:

  • Basic computers: This class covers the basic operational functions of a computer, such as using a mouse, keyboard shortcuts and customizing settings.
  • Information Literacy: An introduction to general principles regarding information literacy. Information literacy is finding the right information and knowing how to use it.
  • Microsoft Word: An introduction to the basics of using, editing and creating documents in Microsoft Word.
  • Windows: An introduction to the basics of using and navigating within the Windows operating system.
  • Email: An introduction to the basics of registering for and using a Web-based email account, as well as safe email practices.
  • World Wide Web and searches: An introduction to using the World Wide Web, including how to navigate the web, using search engines and staying safe online.
  • Social media: An introduction to the social media platforms of Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter, focusing on creating accounts, sharing content and following smart social media practices.

Classes are free, but because space is limited, people wanting to participate should register in advance by calling the Idaho Falls office at (208) 557-2500. Details including class descriptions and schedule can be found on the Idaho Department of Labor online events calendar.
