The WARN Act requires most employers to provide written notice at least 60 calendar days in advance of covered plant closings and mass layoffs. This notice must be provided to either affected workers or their representatives (e.g., a labor union); to the State dislocated worker unit; and to the appropriate unit of local government. An employer’s notice assures that assistance can be provided to affected workers, their families, and the appropriate communities through the State Rapid Response Dislocated Worker Unit. The advance notice allows eligible workers and their families transition time to seek alternative jobs or enter skills training programs.
